LABUAN BAJO GENERAL INFORMATION
Acting as the capital city of the West Manggarai Regency, Labuan Bajo is a melting pot of Bajo, Bugis, Manggarai tribes as well as many newcomers from other parts of Indonesia and the world. This small, but bustling town is a perfect example of the Indonesian Bhinneka Tunngal Ika mindset, Unity in Diversity - with mosques and churches within metres of each other.
The town itself is an ecclectic mix of modern and traditional. Swiss owned bakeries lie opposite ladies selling traditional cakes, traditional markets selling fruits and vegetables pop-up stalls opposite new supermarkets selling imported goods. Fancy yourself an Italian meal? There are 4 Italian restaurants, each famous in their own rights, but walk a few hundred metres, and you will find a plethora of Padang restaurants and bakso (meatball noodle soup) stalls.
